Peat moss big bales or 250 L bags: which packaging fits?

Este artigo está em inglês.

A peat moss big bale can be a practical choice when one growing site uses substantial volumes and has equipment to move and open it. A 250 L bag asks less of the receiving area and can be easier to allocate between benches, teams or smaller sites.

The right format depends on more than the volume you use. Check how the peat will be unloaded, where it will wait, how it will reach the mixing or potting area, and whether you need to distribute individual bags.

Big bales suit sites set up to handle bulk peat

SOLVIKA's big bales come in two sizes, 5500 L and 6000 L, depending on the peat type and grade. Latvian white peat is packed in 5500 L bales and the lightweight Latvian white peat in 6000 L bales, while Lithuanian peat comes in bags. Check the packaging available for the exact grade rather than assuming every bale size applies to every peat.

A bale makes most sense where staff can receive a large unit, move it safely and feed peat into a mixing line or other work area. Before specifying bales, walk through the route from the unloading point to the place of use. Doorways, turning space, floor conditions and access to handling equipment may matter as much as storage capacity.

Think about what happens after a bale is opened. If the whole site draws from one central mixing area, a bulk unit may fit the workflow. If peat must be divided repeatedly between distant greenhouses, a smaller package may save time at the point of use, even when the site consumes a large total volume.

  • Receiving. Confirm that your unloading equipment and receiving area can handle the selected bale format. Tell the supplier if access is restricted.
  • Daily use. Decide how opened peat will be moved, measured and kept clean. Plan this step before comparing the space taken by unopened packages.

250 L bags offer more flexibility across smaller sites

A 250 L bag is a useful middle ground for growers who want a professional peat grade without opening a big bale. It can be assigned to a particular crop, greenhouse or mixing run. Bags also make it simpler to keep different screened fractions separate when a site uses more than one recipe.

Packaging still varies by product. Most of SOLVIKA's peat moss grades come in 250 L bags, alongside other formats. Lithuanian white, dark-brown and 50/50 peat also comes in 70 L bags, while many ready-to-use substrates are available in 50 L, 70 L and 250 L bags. Check the individual product specification before planning a bagged order.

Smaller bags can be the better fit when deliveries are split between sites, space near the potting area is limited, or staff use modest amounts at a time. They are also more suitable than big bales for retail distribution. SOLVIKA packs products under a customer's own label in 50, 70 and 250 L bags, with the available size depending on the product.

Do not choose by nominal volume alone. Consider how many packages the team will open during a normal shift and whether a bag can be moved to its point of use without creating a handling problem. A package that fits easily in storage may still be awkward if it has to travel through narrow working areas.

Loading figures are a starting point for freight planning

SOLVIKA's loading figures give a useful first comparison. A 40 ft high-cube container takes up to 24 big bales of 5500 L or 6000 L, or up to 30 pallets of 250 L bags with 18 bags on each. A full truck takes up to 26 big bales or up to 32 pallets of 250 L bags. The figures move with the product, the packaging and the weight limit, so SOLVIKA confirms each load.

The ranges also show why a package decision should be made alongside a shipment plan. If you need several peat grades, ask how the chosen formats work together in a load. If you are supplying multiple customers or sites, consider where the load will be unloaded and how the packages will be allocated afterwards.

For smaller bags, a container takes up to 44 pallets of 70 L bags with 33 on each, or up to 30 pallets of 50 L bags with 63 on each. The logistics information gives loading figures for the packaging formats, and the exact plan should be confirmed for the products you intend to order.

SOLVIKA's minimum order is one full load, a 40 ft high-cube container or a full truck. Up to 3 products can share that load, and each starts at 10 pallets of 50 L or 70 L bags, 8 pallets of 250 L bags or 6 pallets of big bales. This is worth checking early if you want several grades in relatively small quantities.

Storage needs a plan for both unopened and opened peat

Make space for the delivery before it arrives, not just for the peat once it reaches production. As general good practice, keep packages on a suitable, clean surface and protect them from damage, standing water and contamination. Follow the handling requirements for your equipment and storage area.

For bales, leave enough room to approach, move and open each unit without disturbing neighbouring stock. For bags, plan where pallets will stand and how staff will reach the bags they need first. A layout that requires repeated reshuffling can cancel out the convenience of smaller units.

Opened peat deserves particular attention. Keep it separate from soil, debris and materials used for other crops, especially when it will go into propagation mixes. Use a clear stock rotation system and record which grade has been opened, so a fine fraction is not confused with a coarser one.

Peat condition at use can also be affected by storage and handling. Check moisture and workability as part of your normal mixing routine rather than assuming an opened unit will behave exactly like an unopened one. If your process has strict requirements, describe them when asking for a grade and packaging recommendation.

Choose the grade first, then test the packaging against your workflow

The package cannot make the wrong fraction suitable for a crop. Fine peat is commonly selected for small cells and seed work, while coarser peat is often chosen when a mix needs more open structure. Start with the crop, container size, watering approach and whether you will blend your own fertiliser.

SOLVIKA supplies unlimed white and dark Sphagnum peat at pH 3.5 to 4.5, as well as pH-adjusted peat without fertiliser and ready-to-use growing substrates. Those are different starting points for a grower. An unlimed grade for an acid-loving crop should not be swapped for a pH-adjusted base simply because one package is easier to store.

Once the specification is clear, compare the formats against the way your site actually works. A grower with a central mixing operation and suitable handling equipment may prefer big bales. A nursery using several grades at separate stations may find 250 L bags easier to control, while a retailer may need smaller bags prepared for individual customers.

If you are changing formats, check the complete route on site with the people who unload, store and use the peat. Their answers often reveal practical constraints that are not visible from an annual volume forecast. Then confirm that the chosen grade is supplied in the package size your plan requires.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are SOLVIKA peat moss big bales?

Big bales come in 5500 L and 6000 L, depending on the peat type and grade. Not every grade comes in every size. Confirm the available packaging for the peat you need.

How many big bales or pallets of 250 L bags fit in a shipment?

A 40 ft high-cube container takes up to 24 big bales of 5500 L or 6000 L, or up to 30 pallets of 250 L bags. A full truck takes up to 26 big bales or up to 32 pallets of 250 L bags. SOLVIKA confirms the load for your selected products and packaging.

Should a smaller nursery choose 250 L bags instead of big bales?

Often that depends on handling equipment, storage space and where the peat will be used. A 250 L bag can be easier to allocate between work areas, while a big bale may suit a central mixing operation. Choose the peat grade for the crop first, then check which packaging is available.
