Frequently asked questions

Order sizes, lead times, packaging, standards and paperwork. If what you need is not here, ask us directly.

Ordering

Pallets of 250 L bags stacked in the yard
What is the minimum order quantity?

One full load: a 40 ft high-cube container or a full truck. Up to 3 products can share that load, and each starts at 10 pallets of 50 L or 70 L bags, 8 pallets of 250 L bags or 6 pallets of big bales. Ask us about the specific product you need.

How long does it take to prepare an order?

Typically 2 to 4 weeks, and 4 to 5 weeks in spring and autumn. It also depends on the order size and the specific product. Send us the details and we will confirm a date.

Can we get a sample before ordering?

Yes. We send non-commercial samples by courier. The sample itself, the courier freight and the documentation are charged, so ask us for the current cost and we will confirm it with the specification you want to test.

Why are there no prices on the website?

Because a useful price depends on the volume, the packaging, the destination and the delivery term. Peat is bulky and light, so freight often decides the delivered cost more than the product does. Tell us those four things and you get a delivered price rather than a list price you would have to adjust.

Can you mix a substrate to our own recipe?

Yes, and a good share of what we ship is exactly that. Send a specification, or the datasheet of what you buy today, and we will match it. The lines blend peat categories with perlite, clay, wood fibre, limestone, wetting agent and NPK 14:16:18 fertiliser, and can add Radigen, a slow-release micronutrient fertiliser.

Products

70 L bags of SOLVIKA peat moss stacked on the packing line
What is the difference between white and dark peat moss?

How far it has decomposed, and therefore how heavy it is. White peat is slightly decomposed, over 90% organic matter, and weighs 80 to 200 kg per 1000 L. Dark-brown peat is moderately to highly decomposed, over 90% organic matter, and weighs 200 to 320 kg per 1000 L. Both sit at pH 3.5 to 4.5 unlimed. White holds more air, dark holds more water and weighs more to freight.

SOLVIKA MIX 320

Which peat should we use for blueberries?

Unlimed white peat at pH 3.5 to 4.5. Code 141 at 0-40 mm is the usual base substrate for planting two-year-old blueberries. 140LV and 140W run the same fraction, and 124LV at 20-40 mm is the coarser option. None of them are limed, so the acidity blueberries need is already there.

SOLVIKA MIX 141 · SOLVIKA MIX 140LV · SOLVIKA MIX 140W · SOLVIKA MIX 124LV

What do you supply for a mushroom casing layer?

Casing peat limed to pH 7.0 to 7.5, made to order. It is made from selected Baltic Sphagnum dark peat moss, screened specifically for casing and mixed on a computer-controlled line to a fixed recipe. Peat is a natural material, so its figures are typical values, not a guarantee for each batch. Send us the specification you cased with last and we will match it.

What packaging sizes are available?

Bags of 5, 10, 20, 50, 70, 150 and 250 L, and big bales of 5500 L and 6000 L. Available sizes vary by product.

Do you make retail products under a private label?

Yes, in 50, 70 and 250 L bags. The product name and code are printed on every bag free of charge, with a short name of yours where it fits. A sticker carries more text, and a bag printed with your own design is possible for large, repeat volumes.

Can the substrates be used in organic farming?

Natural peat moss with nothing added is authorised in organic production for use in horticulture: it is listed in Annex II of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/1165. The limed base substrates also carry a wetting agent, and the organic mixes are made to order on organic slow-release fertiliser. Whether a product fits your system is decided by your certification body, and SOLVIKA holds no organic certification. Tell us which scheme you work under and we will send the specification to check against it.

Quality and standards

Retained samples on the shelves
How is the quality of the substrates ensured?

Each substrate is mixed on computer-controlled lines to its own fixed recipe, and only first-grade additives are used. Peat is a natural material, so the published figures are typical values for the grade, not a guarantee for each batch.

Which standards are the published figures measured to?

pH to EN 13037, electrical conductivity to EN 13038, moisture to EN 13040 and packaged volume to EN 12580. Figures on the product pages are typical values for the grade rather than guarantees for a single batch. Ask us if you need a batch analysis.

What if a delivery is not right?

Check the number of packages when the load arrives and tell us in writing within 7 days. Any other complaint goes to us in writing within 30 days of delivery, with the order number, the truck or container number, photos or video and test results. Please check pH and EC before you use the product. The full rules are in our terms of sale.

What happens to a peat field after the last harvest?

None of the fields we work with has reached that point yet. When one does, the planned procedure is rewetting: water is returned to the field, and the bog ecosystem starts to form again.

After delivery

Pallets of 250 L SOLVIKA PEAT MOSS bags loaded onto a truck
How should peat moss be stored?

Covered, cool and off the greenhouse floor. Use the oldest stock first and check it before use.

Guide: How to store peat moss and substrates before use

How do we loosen a compressed bale?

Open it and break it up gently, so the coarse fraction you chose is not ground down.

Guide: How to loosen compressed peat bales without losing structure

There is white mould on the surface. Is that a problem?

Natural peat can carry fungal spores. In warm, humid conditions they can form white mycelium on the surface, which does not harm plants and normally disappears after a couple of days.

Guide: White mould on peat moss when you open a bag: is it harmful?

Why does a bag look smaller than its litres?

The volume is measured loose when the bag is filled, to EN 12580, before the peat is compressed. Loosened, it returns to its volume.

Can peat moss freeze on the way?

Yes. From December to March peat can freeze in transit, depending on the weather.

Shipping and documents

6000 L big bales loaded and strapped in a container
Where do shipments load from?

Klaipeda Port in Lithuania or Riga Port in Latvia for containers. European road deliveries go by full truck load direct from the production sites.

How much fits in a container or a truck?

A 40 ft high-cube container takes up to 24 big bales, 30 pallets of 250 L or 50 L bags or 44 pallets of 70 L bags. A full truck takes up to 26 big bales, 32 pallets of 250 L bags or 30 pallets of 70 L bags. Loads move with the product, the packaging and the weight limit, so we confirm the figures for yours. Full figures for every packaging format are on the logistics page.

Which delivery terms do you work on?

Containers ship FCA, FOB, CFR or CIF from Klaipeda or Riga. Trucks go EXW or DAP, and DAP is only for delivery within the EU. Name your preferred delivery term when you ask for a price, along with the destination country and port of discharge or the full delivery address.

What documents come with a shipment?

Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, an EUR.1 movement certificate where it applies, and the bill of lading. Marine cargo insurance can be arranged on request through Lloyd's of London, Syndicate 1221.

Incoterms

Who pays what under each delivery term?

About the figures on this page

They are typical values for each grade, measured to EN 13037, EN 13038, EN 13040 and EN 12580, and our best knowledge from the crops we supply.

Growing conditions differ from one site to the next, so treat the advice as a starting point and adjust it to your crop, your water and your climate. Ask us for a batch analysis or a recommendation for your crop.

Tell us what you grow

Send these three things and you get a price for your delivery term and a lead time back.

  1. 1What you grow, or the recipe you want matched.
  2. 2The volume, in cubic metres or truckloads.
  3. 3The delivery country and town.
