Screened Sphagnum peat moss, close up

Sphagnum peat moss, screened 18 ways

Unlimed Baltic Sphagnum, pH 3.5 to 4.5 throughout, from Latvia and Lithuania.

Where the peat comes from sets its weight and colour. The screen sets how it holds water and air. Open any grade for its full specification.

Every grade opens its own quality declaration: type of peat, organic matter, moisture, pH, EC, bulk density, packaging and additives.

Properties common to every type

pH (H₂O)3.5 to 4.5 (EN 13037)
EC (H₂O)below 0.3 mS/cm (EN 13038), low salt content
Moisture35 to 55% (EN 13040)
Packagingmeasured to EN 12580

What peat moss does in a mix

Peat moss, also called Sphagnum moss or Sphagnum peat moss, grows in acidic, water-logged environments such as bogs and swamps. It forms a thick layer of organic material that accumulates and partly decomposes over thousands of years to become peat. In horticulture it is used as a soil amendment or as the main component of a growing mix, because it holds water, improves soil structure and gives a stable, predictable root zone.

  • Moisture retention. Highly absorbent and able to hold a large amount of water, which keeps the root zone from drying out between irrigations.
  • Aeration. Porous despite that water-holding, so air still circulates around the roots. Good aeration is essential for healthy root growth.
  • Nutrient content. Small amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus trace elements such as iron, manganese and copper. The low, stable baseline is the advantage: you set the nutrient level with fertiliser instead of working around ours.
  • Root growth. A spongy texture that encourages rooting, and a high water-holding capacity that keeps roots hydrated.
  • Clean. Bog peat is naturally free of weed seed and pathogens, so it is far less likely to introduce disease or invasive species than many alternatives.
  • Low pH. Naturally acidic, which suits blueberries, rhododendrons, heather and other acid-loving crops with no amendment at all.

We work with both milled and block-cut peat raw materials, which is what allows structures from extra-fine propagation grades through to coarse professional growing media.

Need it limed, fertilised or blended?

The peat above is raw. Our substrate range takes the same material to pH 5.5 to 6.5 and adds fertiliser, perlite or clay.
